You must complete this activity before midnight Wednesday night.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Listen carefully to each of the songs below. I suggest using headphones so you can hear the music and words clearly. I have included links to the lyrics in case you want to read along as you listen.
2) As you listen, determine the theme of each song. (Remember that the theme is the message of the song. It is not a single word.)
3) After you have listened to every song, pick four songs and match the theme of each song to the theme of a sonnet we have studied. We have studied four sonnets; therefore, I want you to give each sonnet a parter song. Do not leave any sonnets out. Remember that the themes of the songs will not necessarily be perfect matches with those of the sonnets; you will need to think about how themes are related. Use a little imagination.
4) Post a comment here in which you list and discuss each pairing that you made. For each pairing, explain WHY you paired that particular song with that particular sonnet. Be very thorough in each explanation, using specific information from both the song AND the sonnet to support each pairing. I expect at least 7-8 complete sentences per response. I cannot emphasize enough that the key to receiving full credit here is to be thorough.
Be sure to number each response (1, 2, 3, and 4). I suggest typing your responses in MS Word so that you can spell check and edit before you copy and paste into the comment box. Remember, this work is part of your test grade. Do not blow it off.
Each response will be worth ten points.....making this portion of the test worth a total of 40 points.

For the first song I think the theme is "that no matter where you are I'll always love you." for the second song the theme is” I loved you enough to write this song so you should be glad and not hate it." I think that song 1 goes with sonnet 18 because they are both talking about their “descriptive” love. They are both saying compliments describing their “lady friends.” They are also both love lines, too. I think this is the matching pair.
I think song 2 goes with sonnet 116. They both are about true love. They are saying love is not the same as true love. I think that this sonnet goes the best with song 2.
I think song 3 goes with sonnet 130. They both talk about the “lady friend’s” descriptions. It describes descriptions just like sonnet 130, but this one is positive towards it and is the guy telling the girl that she doesn’t have to be perfect.
I think that song 4 goes best with sonnet 29. They are both about people wishing for things. They are also about people who live a bad life, but wished for a better one. These two match because they are both about hope.

I think that the song “You’re My Everything” by the Temptations is like sonnet 29. I think the song is like sonnet 29 because it is talking about that even in the darkest hour the one you love will always make you happy. In the song there is a line that says “When my way was dark and troubles were near your love provided the light so I can see” this is a great example that says when something bad happens your love will make you happy. And in sonnet 29 Shakespeare says “ Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising, haply I think of thee, and then my state sings hymns to heavens gate” this means that even if you were in the worst state you could ever be in your love would make you happy. This is why “You’re My Everything” by the Temptations has the same meaning as sonnet 29.
I think that the song “Your Song” by Elton John is like sonnet 18. I think the song Is like sonnet 18 because it is saying as long as this poem/song is alive you will be remembered because of how beautiful you are. In the song there is a line that says “ I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is when your in the world” this means Elton John wrote a song about a girl and was saying I hope you don’t mind that I will say how beautiful you are and that your beauty will be remembered by this song. And in sonnet 18 Shakespeare says “But thy eternal summer shall not fade” which means she is beautiful like the summer but summers fade but since she is in this song she will never fade. This is why “Your Song” by Elton John has the same meaning as sonnet 18.
I thing that the song “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel is like sonnet 130. I think the song is like sonnet 130 because they are both saying the same message that nobody is perfect and even though they have imperfections the person that loves them will always love them no matter what. In the song there is a line that says “ Don’t go change the color of your hair” which means don’t go change for me nobody is perfect and I want you just the way you are. In sonnet 130 Shakespeare says “ I love to hear her speak, yet well I know that music hath a far more pleasing sound” this means he loves to hear her speak but nobody is perfect because nobodies voice is as perfect as music. This is why “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel has the same meaning as sonnet 130.

In sonnet 116 Shakespeare says “ That looks on the tempests and is never shaken” it means that anything could happen you could become old and wrinkly or get into a car accident and the person that loves you will always love you till the end of time. This is why “ Longer” by Dan Fogelberg has the same meaning as sonnet 116.

I think that the theme of the song is that when he is with his love his life changes. I would compare this song to sonnet 29, because in the sonnet it say that when he is without his love he feels like an outcast and is unhappy. When he is with his love he would not change his life with a king. In both the sonnet and the song is says that when they are with their love there life changes dramatically.
2. Your song
I think that the theme of the song is that his love makes his life wonderful and that as long as people listen to the song they will know how wonderful she is. I would compare this song to sonnet 18 because in the sonnet he is saying his loves is very beautiful and as long as people read the poem her beauty will always live. For example on the sonnet he says that as long as men can breath or eyes can see, so long lives this and this gives life to thee. In both the song and the poem it is saying how even after their love dies that they will always remain in the song or the sonnet.
3. Just the way you are
I think the theme of the sonnet is that he doesn’t care about the imperfections that his love has he loves her for who she is. He does not want her to change the way she is. I would compare the song to sonnet 130 because it is talking about the imperfections that his love has. For example the breath of my mistress reeks. In the song and the sonnet it is saying that nobody is perfect and we all have imperfections.
4. Longer
I think the theme of song is that is very strong and will last forever. For example their love is “stronger than any mountain cathedral”. I would compare the song to sonnet 116, because it is talking about how true love will always remain through good times and bad. Both the sonnet and the song talk about how true love will always remain.

1. I think the theme of this song is that once you find someone you have true love with; you will stick on them all your life. I think that this song is connected with sonnet 29 because it talks about in both the readings that the man’s life was all dull, but when he met his love it turns bright and beautiful. Also these readings are connected because both of the readings say that whenever the man thinks about his love he gets happy and joyful. Another reason why both these readings are connected is because they both are telling that a man’s life can change after he meets a true love. I think all the reasons I just listed are good reasons for describing how sonnet 29 and the song “You’re My Everything” are connected.
2. I think the theme of this song is that a man in love will do anything for a woman if he had the chance to. I think this song and sonnet 116 are connected because they both are talking about what you really have to do to show true love. Both of these readings are the same because it says to me that love is an unknown thing and people will do anything for it. Also these readings are the same because to me after reading it over and over it says that love is really a great thing and you just have to be truthful of your love to have it. I think he is saying that the girl he loves is all he thinks about. Even when he has a bad time he thinks about her. She is his life because he always dreams about her and thinks about her. He feels so blessed he found the girl because he is so in love.

I think Elton John is singing this song for a girl. The song is saying that even if he doesn’t have he would still love her. Also I think he is saying that he loves her so much the only gift he can give her is song, He is also saying his life is so wonderful because she is in the world.
“Just the Way You Are”
Billy Joel is saying he likes his girl just the way she is. He doesn’t want her to change at all and he would do anything for her. Also he is saying he has been through good times with her but he would also go through bad times if he was still with her. Billy Joel is also saying he loves her forever and he never wants her to change because he loves her so much.
“Longer”
Dan Fogelberg is saying he has loved her for such a long time his love is longer than anything. Also he is saying he will be in love with her forever. Dan Fogelberg is also saying that they can do anything together because they are in love.

1. For the first song you're my everything i decided that sonnet 29 matched the first song. In the song he is saying that his life was dull and ordinary. When he met his lady love all that went away, just like in sonnet 29 when the man hated himself, but when he thought of his love he was filled with everlasting joy. They are both pretty much saying that when their lady is not in their life the feel melancholy.
2. I decided that sonnet 18 and your song are similar. Both poems they talk about a feature a lady that they noticed. an example would be "Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen." another would be "Thou art more lovely and more temperate." Tey both talk about how as long as the poem is being read they will remeber they girl he is talking about
3. Sonnet 16 is what I decided to pais with just the way you are. In both songs I saw that the loved the girl for who she really was and not who she appeared to be. Neither wanted their girls to change because the new what true love is. They stuck with their girl through the good times and the bad.
4. Last but not least i decided that Longer was similar to sonnet 130. Shakespeare got mad at the kind of poem longer is. going so far of into the writers imagination that there is no reality. Example:Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
